Illinois State // DePaul |
A week after its first loss of the season, Illinois State is back in action Wednesday, visiting DePaul at 12:00 p.m. The game was moved up from its original 7:05 tip-off time after it was selected for Field Trip Day at DePaul, with over 3,000 Chicagoland elementary school children scheduled to be in attendance.
REDBIRDS-BLUE DEMONS SERIES
DePaul leads the all-time series with Illinois State, 7-3. Illinois State won the first meeting in 1977,but DePaul won the next three matchups. Illinois State won consecutive games in 1983-84 before the series took a hiatus of more than 20 years. The series began again in 2006 and DePaul has won the last four meetings.
LAST TIME OUT
Illinois State suffered its first loss of the season at South Dakota State, 73-70, Nov. 24. Katie Broadway's 14 first-half points helped ISU to a one-point lead at halftime. Emily Hanley's three baskets in the first three minutes of the second half extended the lead to seven, 42-35. ISU suffered through a span of 9:30 without a field goal, which allowed SDSU to go on a 17-4 run and take a seven-point lead, 65-38, with under four minutes left. The Redbirds did stage a comeback in the final minute, with a Shala Jackson three-pointer cutting the deficit to one, 71-70, with eight second left. After two free throws, Hanley's last second three-pointer fell short. Hanley did record her first-career double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
DOMINATING THE LAND OF LINCOLN
Illinois State is always happy to see a school from the Land of Lincoln on the schedule. ISU is 213-107 all-time against Illinois schools, winning the last nine meetings. ISU's last loss to an Illinois school was against DePaul last year.
REDBIRDS LEARN FROM MISTAKES
Illinois State has made a habit of learning from its mistakes and focusing on the future. ISU hasn't lost consecutive games since March of 2009, when the Redbirds lost the regular-season finale at Creighton and the MVC Tournament Quarterfinal game against Evansville in 2009. In the 44 games since then, ISU has lost only 10 times and never two in a row.
WELL-BALANCED DIET
The Illinois State offense is the perfect example what a well-balanced diet can do. The Redbirds lead the Valley in scoring (72.8) ppg) by virtue of five players averaging more than 9.0 points per game. Through the first four games of he season, a different player has led the team in scoring in each game. The Redbirds have had at least three players score in double-figures in all three game, six players who scored at least nine points against Eastern Illinois.
REDBIRDS TURN UP THE D
Even though the Stephanie Glance era is only three games old, one theme is extremely evident: defense. The Redbirds play tough, pressure defense for all 40 minutes. ISU is holding opponents to just 61.2 points per game and 37.0 percent shooting, while forcing 17.0 turnovers per game. ISU had 16 steals in the win over Eastern Illinois, the most since forcing 14 against Bradley in 2008.
