Illinois State redshirt freshman Jon Ekey earned one final holiday gift when he was named the Missouri Valley Conference's Newcomer of the Week Monday by the league office.
Ekey led the Redbirds to their first road victory of the season, when Illinois State topped UNC Wilmington, 62-60, in overtime on Dec. 20. Ekey poured in a career-best 22 points, on 8-for-13 shooting, while also adding a career-high 12 rebounds. It was his first collegiate double-double.
The Independence, Mo., native also added two blocked shots and two assists, while logging 37 minutes of play and shooting 4-for-8 on threes.
On the season, Ekey has played in all 11 games for the Redbirds, while starting five contests. He is averaging 4.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Ekey is also tied for the team lead in blocked shots with 17.
