Illinois State // Milwaukee |
After playing just three games in 25 days, Illinois State begins a stretch of four games in seven days against UW-Milwaukee Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. The Redbirds return home for the first time in nearly three weeks for three-consecutive games in Redbird Arena.
Illinois State returns home after a tournament in Cancun, Mexico, and a few days off for the holidays. The Redbirds will look to stay undefeated at home, having won their first four games at Redbird Arena this season.
Assistant coach Sheila Roux is quite familiar with UW-Milwaukee, having spent the four previous seasons as an assistant with the Panthers.
REDBIRDS-PANTHERS SERIES
Illinois State leads the all-time series with Milwaukee, 2-1. ISU won the first meeting at Redbird Arena in 2000 and Milwaukee won at home the following season. The series resumed last year with a 51-38 ISU win at the Klotsche Center in Milwaukee. Milwaukee's 38 points were the lowest total by a Redbird opponent since Iowa State scored 37 in 1993. Illinois State held UWM to just 11 points in the second half, as the Panthers went the first 10:53 of the period without a field goal, missing 14-consecutive shots. ISU recorded eight blocks and nine steals in the win.
IT'S A MARATHON AND A SPRINT
After playing just three games in 25 days, Illinois State is set to play four games in a seven-day span. The Redbirds host UW-Milwaukee (Dec. 28), Bradley (Dec. 30), and Northern Iowa (Jan. 1), and visit Northern Illinois (Jan. 3) in the next week. Last season, Illinois State had a similar run with four games in an eight-day span, which included its first conference games.
HOME, SWEET HOME
Illinois State is glad to be back in Redbird Arena for the first time in nearly two weeks. ISU is 53-12 in Redbird Arena over the last four seasons, including four wins this year. ISU is 25-4 against non-conference opponents during that span.
HIGH-POWERED OFFENSE
The Redbird offense was firing on all cylinders on a four-game stretch to start December. The Redbirds averaged 83.0 points per game and shot 45.4 percent from the field in the first four games of the month. Katie Broadway and Emily Hanley both averaged over 15 points per game. Illinois State leads the Valley in scoring (76.2 ppg) and field goal percentage (.443).
BRIGHT LIGHTS OF BROADWAY
Illinois State entered the season in the unenviable position of needing to replace its top-three scorers from a year ago. Katie Broadway has emerged as a go-to scorer, averaging 13.3 points per game and making a team-high 18 three-pointers. Broadway has scored in double-figures in seven of the last eight games. After starting the season shooting 6-for-25 (.240) from three-point range, She shot 11-for-21 (.524) over a three-game stretch (12/4-12/22).
HANLEY STEPPING UP
Emily Hanley is taking full advantage of her bigger role this season. In her first two seasons with the Redbirds, Hanley averaged 4.6 points and 3.1 rebounds per game in 14.3 minutes per contest. This season, Hanley has started all nine games, averaging 14.3 points and 7.8 rebounds in 32.0 minutes per game. She ranks in the top-five in the conference in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage. Hanley has scored in double-figures in six of the last seven games.
