Post-Game Interview
NORMAL, Ill. -
Illinois State outscored Illinois-Chicago 15-2 during the final four minutes of regulation to force overtime, and the Redbirds (4-2) went on to beat the Flames (4-3) 94-86 Saturday afternoon at Redbird Arena. Katie Broadway hit two key shots, including a jumper in the lane with 22 seconds left in regulation to tie the game, and a three-pointer with 55 seconds remaining in overtime to seal the come-from-behind Redbird victory.
Kenyatta Shelton and Emily Hanley each recorded double-doubles for the Redbirds, as Shelton grabbed career-highs of 22 points and 22 rebounds. Her 22 rebounds tied for the second-most in ISU single-game history, matching Charlotte Lewis' total against Western Michigan in 1978. Hanley also notched career-highs in both categories, with a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds.
After both teams exchanged baskets during the opening five minutes, UIC grabbed the momentum, going on an 11-4 run to take a 19-13 lead midway through the first half. The Redbirds responded with baskets by Shelton, Hanley and Shala Jackson to pull within 23-20. The Flames put together a 7-2 run, and once again, the Redbirds countered, pulling within 34-29 on an offensive rebound and put-back basket by Shelton.
The Flames proceeded to outscore ISU 7-2 late in the first half, but Broadway shifted the momentum, hitting back-to-back three pointers to cut UIC's lead to 41-37 with 2:10 to play. UIC's Erin Higgins answered with a three-point basket, and two Flames' free throws by Shameia Green extended UIC's lead to nine. Then, with under a minute to play in the first half, Jackson missed two free throws, but Hanley rebounded for the Redbirds and dished it back out to Jackson who hit a three-pointer to cut Illinois State's halftime deficit to 46-40.
Hanley started the second half with an 18-foot jump-shot to cut the Redbird deficit to four, and after a missed UIC shot, Broadway drove to the basket and passed it back to a wide-open Hanley who hit a three-pointer from the left wing to pull ISU within one. Illinois State took its first lead of the second half on a three-point-play by Shelton with 14:45 to play, 54-52.
With the game tied at 54, Broadway hit back-to-back field goals to give ISU a four-point lead, but another Higgins three-pointer started a 22-7 run that put UIC ahead, 80-67, with just over five minutes remaining.
The Redbirds put together their final run of regulation, outscoring UIC 15-2 in the final four minutes. Five different Redbirds scored during the run, including Bradway's final jumper inside the lane to tie the score at 82. A missed three-pointer by UIC's Taylor Foulks at the buzzer forced overtime.
Hanley scored twice in the first 90 seconds of overtime to maintain the Redbird momentum. Jackson then connected on a pair of free throws, and Broadway's three-pointer with 55 seconds to play secured the Redbird win.
Illinois State returns to action Thursday, Dec. 9 at home against Ball State for a 7:05 tip-off.
