Junior Katie Broadway recorded a career-high sixth-straight double-digit scoring effort with 18 total points in Illinois State's 77-51 victory over Ball State at Redbird Arena Thursday evening. Broadway also set a season-high four converted three-point attempts. The Redbirds move to 5-2 record on the season.
Illinois State used a balanced scoring attack, as three other ISU players scored in double-digits. Shala Jackson posted her fifth double-digit scoring effort of the season, as the senior tallied 12 points in the contest. Hannah Spanich also recorded a double-double, her second of the season and fifth double-digit scoring performance with 10 points and 10 rebounds on the night. Alexis Jenkins pulled down a season-high and career-tying five rebounds and recorded her first double-digit scoring effort this season, with 10 points.
Other notables included Amanda Clifton, who set a season- and career-high nine assists in the game and tied a season-high with four boards as the Redbirds racked up 19 assists on 29 made field goals.
The Redbirds started out with an 8-2 run in the first half, with four of the points coming from two turnovers by Ball State. After a three-point bucket from Jackson and back-to-back treys from Broadway, the `Birds stretched the lead to 20-6 in the first six and a half minutes, forcing the Cardinals to call a timeout.
Illinois State came out firing in the remainder of the first half, as Broadway accounted for 11 of the `Birds' points and Jackson with 10. Clifton broke her season- and career-high record of six assists during the first half after dishing out the ball seven times.
ISU went on to tally nine points off of five Ball State turnovers, while shooting 57 percent from the field and 70 percent from beyond the arc. Holding Ball State to 31 percent from the field, the Redbirds led 49-23 going into halftime, scoring a season-high first half point total.
Ball State came out in the second half with a strong defensive showing, as the Cardinals held the `Birds scoreless for the first three and a half minutes. After both teams exchanged baskets, Illinois State continued to build its lead to 63-33 with 12 minutes remaining in the contest.
The Cardinals made an effort to battle back and brought the score within 22 points with five minutes remaining. The Redbirds were able to hold onto a 26-point lead to win the contest, 77-51.
Illinois State gave up eight points off of 13 turnovers, as Ball State gave up 13 points off of 13 turnovers in the game.
After a week off for final exams, the Redbirds resume play at the Caribbean Classic in Cancun, Mexico, Dec. 20-21.
