CARBONDALE, Ill. -
In the first day of competition at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Carbondale, Ill., Illinois State's swimmers broke the school's 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay records while moving into the third-place position. Illinois State sits just nine points behind Southern Illinois going into day two of competition.
In the first event of Thursday's competition Jeanette Nolte, Lauren Terzis, Jessica McGee and Amy Schaefer broke the 16 year-old school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.97. The previous school record of 1:35.99 was set in 1994 with the assistance of current graduate assistant coach Jennifer Godlewski.
ISU's Molly Gomberg, Lindsay Dinkelman, Nolte and Schaefer finished the meet on strong note by breaking the Illinois State record in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:52.03. The previous record time of 3:53.72 was set in 2003.
"Overall it was a solid Redbird performance on the first night," head coach Steve Paska said. "Breaking the school record in the first event was a great way to start the meet. The team increased the level of momentum with their personal-best and record-breaking swims."
After tying her personal-best time with her leadoff 24.22 split-time in the record-breaking 200 free relay, Nolte added to her day of accomplishments by reaching for third place in the 200-yard Individual Medley (IM) with a personal-best time of 2:08.34. In the 200-yard IM's preliminaries Megan Weber achieved a personal-best time of 2:23.26.
In the 500-yard freestyle Terzis led the `Birds with a third-place finish and time of 4:58.42. Ashley Bachler finished close with a sixth-place touch and personal-best time of 5:04.93. In the morning's preliminaries for the 500-yard freestyle Sarah Coghlin recorded a personal-best time of 5:02.53.
In the consolation heat of the 500-yard freestyle Danielle Schumacher set a personal-best time of 5:04.30.
Schaefer recorded a season-best time of 24.20 in the preliminaries of the 50-yard freestyle and gave more support in the finals as she took sixth place. In the preliminaries for the 50-yard freestyle Chelsea Becker and Maryssa Beckman set personal-best times of 26.40 and 26.33.
"I am anxiously waiting to see how the Redbirds perform as we get ready for day two of the finals," Paska said. "We need to build on the performance that we had tonight, and our student-athletes need to come ready to swim in the morning. The atmosphere of today's meet was electric, and I think we're in store for some great competition."
As two days of competition remain in the MVC Championships, Illinois State's divers will join the swimmers in tomorrow's preliminaries at 11 a.m., and final-round action at 6 p.m. The State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships will conclude Saturday, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals beginning at 4 p.m.
