Ashleen Bracey helped Illinois State make a little bit of history Friday night against Wichita State on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. The Redbirds' 62-50 victory over the visiting Shockers marked the first time ever ISU has had three-straight years with a double-digit winning streak. The victory pushed the `Birds current streak to 10. It was also the seventh time in school history the `Birds have had a double-digit winning streak.
Bracey continued to establish herself in the Illinois State record book as her 18 point, 11 rebound performance marked the sixth time this season and 18th time in her career she has had a double-double. She is now tied with Melanie Ward for fourth on the all-time double-double list.
Three other Redbirds helped contribute in the scoring column including Maggie Krick (13 points), Katie Broadway (11 points) and Emily Hanley (10 points). Nicolle Lewis had a season-best six blocked shots, one short of her career high. ISU out blocked the Shockers 9-0 led by Lewis (6) and Bracey (3).
Leading 11-10 with 10:31 remaining in the first half, the Redbirds used a 21-12 run to close out the half and head into the locker room with a 31-22 advantage. Bracey led the way for Illinois State with 13 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots, while Hanley and Broadway came off the bench to chip in eight points apiece. The `Birds shot 54 percent for the half to the Shockers' 35 percent.
Wichita State came out hot in the second half and cut the Redbird lead to 40-38 at the 8:04 mark on a jumper by Sheena Johnson. That was as close as they would get as the Shocker's comeback ignited an ISU spark as the Redbirds closed out the game on a 14-6 run.
Jessica Diamond led the way for Wichita State with 11 points while Sheena Johnson and Michelle Price added 10 points apiece.
Illinois State will close out their three-game home stand Sunday afternoon when they host Missouri State. The Redbirds stole one from the Bears on their home court, 81-72, Jan. 18. Tipoff is set for 2:05 p.m.
