MILWAUKEE, Wis. -
The Illinois State women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 road victory in Milwaukee, Wis., against Green Bay on Saturday Feb. 13. Doubles team Julia Zubkova and Franziska Steinhardt once again claimed the doubles point for ISU. With the win, the Redbirds improve to a 5-2 record on the season.
The day started with Zubkova and Steinhardt earning their sixth doubles victory of the spring, topping Jennifer Bradfield and Lauryn Grimando, 8-3. Carmen Peters and Hannah Esker claimed the other doubles point with an 8-2 victory over Laura Bartingdale and Morgan Wueve.
"We lost one set in singles and another in doubles," head coach Chris Hoover said. "The student-athletes did pretty well and took care of business. I'm happy to see Julia and Franziska continuing their success in doubles. Aniko has been playing at the number one singles position and it has been hard for her but she's in it and she's fighting tough. I would like to see her win the point tomorrow."
The Redbirds claimed victory in five of the six singles positions. Esker continued to play at the No. 6 position where she bested Maria Anderson, 6-1, 6-2. Esker improved her record to 5-2 on the year.
"Hannah is always a good player," said Hoover. "She gets out there, takes control and plays tough against her competition. I look forward to seeing her play a tougher match tomorrow. Today was a warm-up for the team to get us ready for the match against Marquette."
Illinois State will take on Marquette Sunday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m. on the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
