CARBONDALE, Ill. -
In the second-place finish at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships, Illinois State's Sarah Rendek streamlined past the competition in the 200-yard butterfly to take first-place and set a new school record with a time of 2:04.15. The Redbird 400-yard freestyle relay including Jeanette Nolte, Lauren Terzis, Danielle Schumacher and Amy Schaefer took second-place and also set a new school record with a time of 3:29.38.
Illinois State finished in second-place with 706 points, finishing ahead of Southern Illinois (680), Evansville (432) and Northern Iowa (345.5), while falling only to Missouri State (981.5).
Head coach Steve Paska was impressed with the two record-breaking swims.
"The last two swimming events were definitely the climax of today's meet, and were incredible swims," Paska said. "I have to give a lot of credit to the swimmers that led off in the first events of the meet. Those swimmers really built the momentum up for us as we moved into those last two events."
In Saturday's 1650-yard freestyle Terzis finished in third-place with a season-best time of 17:07.80. Schumacher gave support finishing in fourth-place and with a personal-best time of 17:10.16.
Molly Gomberg placed third in the 200-yard backstroke and set a personal-best time of 2:05.15. Following Gomberg, Brianna Winkler reached for a personal-best time of 2:13.04, and Maryssa Beckman and Megan Weber recorded season-best times of 2:12.86 and 2:19.82.
In the 100-yard freestyle Nolte set her personal-best time of 51.94 in the preliminaries and finished in fifth-place in the finals. Schaefer finished sixth behind Nolte after having a season-best swim in the preliminaries with a time of 52.46. Also having notable performances in the 100-yard freestyle were Kelly Healy with a personal-best time of 54.56, and Jessica McGee with a season-best swim of 54.50.
Lindsay Dinkelman held a season-best performance and fifth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, but was not alone as Sarah Piechocinski had a season-best time of 2:28.92, and Caitlin Falconer and Morgan Buechele set personal-best times of 2:25.73 and 2:30.89.
Sarah Coghlin helped the `Birds in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in third-place with a personal-best time of 2:07.89, just behind Rendek's record-setting swim.
The previous 200-yard butterfly record of 2:04.22 was set in 1991 by Jenni Chapman, and the previous school record of 3:30.13 in the 400-yard free relay was set in 1993.
After the tremendous swimming in day-three of the championships, diver Katelyn Prorok held another motivating performance as she finished in fourth-place on three-meter with 247.60.
"Prorok put everything in to each of her dives tonight," diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "It was an amazing gut-check performance by Prorok; she really showed how tough of an individual she is and did everything that she could to help out the team. It was an amazing experience for all of us to watch her perform this weekend."
After their performances during the season and at the championships, the league office named Prorok, Nolte, Terzis, Gomberg, Rendek and Coghlin to the Missouri Valley All-Conference Team.
"I couldn't be more proud of how our student-athletes performed this weekend," Paska said. "Our team maintained a great level of enthusiasm and performed with a lot of resiliency all weekend."
Prorok will take a month off from competition before traveling to West Lafayette, Ind. for the NCAA Zone C Diving Regionals March 12-14.
