Illinois State senior Britt Knutson carded the lowest score for the Redbirds during the first round of the three-day Hurricane Invitational. Knutson ended the day in a tie for sixth place individually, firing a one-over par 73 (36-37).
ISU finished the first day in a tie for 10th place as a team, carding a 308. The Redbirds sit in 10th place along with Texas State and Southern Mississippi.
"We can take a lot of positives out of today's round," said head coach Darby Sligh. "Britt really stepped up for us and I couldn't be more excited for her start to this season."
Senior Marisa Milligan shot the second lowest score for ISU with a 77 (36-41), placing in a tie for 34th. Senior Laura Harris will begin the second round in a tie for 44th place individually after carding a 78 (37-41) in the first round. Sophomore Hannah Bachman and senior Stacey Miller ended the first round in a tie for 60th and 71st respectively. Bachman fired an 80, while Miller came up one stroke behind with an 81.
"We still have a lot of areas to improve upon for tomorrow," Sligh said. "I'm looking forward to a big movement up the leader board for the Redbirds in the second round."
Georgia State leads the tournament with a first-round score of 292, followed by Coastal California with a 296.
The tournament will continue Monday, Feb. 15 with 18 holes beginning at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start.
