Stats

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Illinois State men's golf team got off to a tough start the first day at the Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio, Texas. Head coach Ray Kralis and his team find themselves in last place in the 15-team field after the first two rounds as they carded a 627 (317-310).

"Overall it was a huge blow to a group that wanted to get off to a great start, but at the same time this game can do this to you and it did it to us today," Kralis said. "We've got no other choice but to pick ourselves up and come back tomorrow and run our brains well and not give today much more thought really."

Senior Joe Emerich led the way for the Redbirds. The senior is tied for 50th place after firing a 153 (79-74). Junior Jeff Kellen is tied for 59th place with a 155 (77-78). Senior Kyle Bragg is tied for 73rd place after carding a 159 (79-80). Sophomore Eric Meier tied for 76th place with a 161 (82-79), and senior Tommy Bliefnick is in a tie for 78th place after posting a 164 (85-79).

Texas Tech and Southeastern Louisiana are in a tie for first place after each fired a score of 582. Tulsa is just one shot behind them after posting a 583.

There is a three-way tie for the individual title as Philipp Westermann of Southeastern Louisiana, Philipp Fendt of Louisiana Lafayette and Dustin Garza of Wichita State all carded a two-round score of 142.

Tuesday's final round will begin at 7:30 a.m.

"The best news for us is tomorrow is a new day and that's how we're approaching it," Kralis said. "We're going to get to the course tomorrow to do a little more preparation for the round, and look for better things to happen."
