Miller, ISU in 8th at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Illinois State senior Stacey Miller fired a one-under par 71 (36-35) in the first round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic to begin the tournament in a tie for fourth place individually. Miller carded four birdies, two on the front nine and two on the back nine, to lead the Redbirds to eighth place as a team.

ISU ended the day with a first-round score of 300. Augusta State is in first place with a four-under par 284, followed by East Carolina with a 290.

"This is the closest we've been in quite some time to breaking through," said head coach Darby Sligh. "We played so solidly on the front nine. It's a shame to have finished the way we did."

Senior Laura Harris also posted two birdies on the front nine to shoot a two-over par 72 (37-37). Harris will begin the second day in a tie for 25th place.

"Stacey and Laura really pulled through for us today," said Sligh. "We are looking for another strong start and finish tomorrow."

Carding a one-over par on the front nine, senior Marisa Milligan shot a 77 (37-40) and is tied for 58th place. Senior Britt Knutson posted the lowest front nine score for the `Birds with a one-under par 35, but fell eight strokes on the back nine to card a 78 (35-43) for the day. Knutson is tied for 72nd place. Beginning the tournament in a tie for 127th place, senior Christine Larson shot a first-round score of 82 (44-38).

The Redbirds will begin the second round of the three-day tournament on Monday with set tee times between 9-11:15 a.m.
