Despite a slight drop in the standings, the Illinois State men's golf team sustained its solid play during the second round at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate in Mobile, Ala., Monday. Junior Jeff Kellen maintained his spot among the tournament leaders after he fired a 1-under-par 71.
Kellen is tied for second place with a 3-under-par 141 (70-71). The Redbirds dropped to sixth place in the 18-team field, but they are just one shot behind a three-way tie for third place, as the team has carded a 10-over-par 586 (293-293) after the first two rounds of play.
Head coach Ray Kralis was pleased with the consistency he saw from his team during their second day of competition.
"It was a solid day for us, Jeff had another good round and collectively from a team standpoint we had solid play," Kralis said. "We're in a great spot going into tomorrow, this is exactly where we want to be and it's a dog fight. We're going to need to put up a strong round tomorrow and have no doubt the guys are capable of it."
Senior Tommy Bliefnick and sophomore Eric Meier are tied for 28th place after each has posted a 4-over-par 148. Senior Joe Emerich is tied for 52nd place with a 7-over-par (77-74). Senior Kyle Bragg finished his day tied for 79th place with an 11-over-par, 155 (81-74). Competing as an individual, junior Will Cullen is tied for 52nd posting a 7-over-par 151 (75-76).
Mississippi is alone in first place with an even-par 576 (291-285). Memphis is in second place after carding a 6-over-par 582 (291-291). There is a three-way tie for third place between Vanderbilt, Louisville and Iowa State. All three teams are at 9-over-par with Illinois State right behind them at 10-over-par.
Kent Bulle of Middle Tennessee State is in first place after firing a two-round score of 5-under-par 139 (67-72). Kellen is in a three-way tie for second place with Nate McCoy of Iowa State and Joe David of Mississippi. All three are two shots back of the leader at 3-under-par 141.
Tomorrow's final round will begin with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m.
"We're going out there with a strong five tomorrow and we're excited about the spot we are in," Kralis said. "We certainly feel good about the first two rounds and we know that we've got what it takes for tomorrow. We've just got to go out there and take care of business."
