Schick, Barrientos Named MIC Athletes of the Week

Feb. 3, 2010

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State gymnasts Erica Schick and Apollonia Barrientos were named Midwest Independent Conference all-arounder of the week and specialist of the week, respectively, for their performances in the tri-meet last Sunday at Horton Field House.

In the meet against Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Winona State, Schick took first place on the all-around (38.175), on the floor exercise (9.775) and on the uneven bars (9.675). Her performance on vault earned her second place (9.725). Schick is ranked first in the conference in the all-around and the uneven bars.

Coach Bob Conkling was not surprised Schick was given the award.

"Erica is well deserving of all-arounder of the week," Conkling said. "She has been leading the conference in the all-around since the season began, so it was only a matter of time before she was recognized for her accomplishments with athlete of the week."

Barrientos, a freshman, was named specialist of the week for last week's performances on the floor exercise (9.700), uneven bars (9.575) and on the vault (9.675). Her floor and uneven bars performances earned third-place scores and her career-high vault was good for fourth-place.

"Apollonia has been fantastic this season," Conkling said. "Especially for a freshman, she has performed consistently well in every meet. She is always great on the floor, but this week she really improved her vault and hit her bar routine. I couldn't be more proud of her."

The Redbirds return to action hosting Ball State this Friday in Horton Field House at 7 p.m.
