NORMAL, Ill. -
Sophomore Hannah Esker improved her singles winning streak to five to help the Illinois State women's tennis team defeat Bradley in their first MVC match of the season, 7-0. With the win, Illinois State now sports a 10-4 record on the season and goes 1-0 in conference play.
Esker and partner Carmen Peters claimed the first Redbird point when they teamed against Brigitte Graf and Kennedy Scott at the No. 3 doubles court, 8-0. Natalia Lech and Ariane Maack sealed the doubles point for Illinois State with a defeat against Kelly Donohue and Jessica Buterbaugh at the No. 2 doubles court, 8-1. Julia Zubkova and Franziska Steinhardt closed the doubles court with a victory over Nicole Miller and Emily Regenold, 8-3, at the No. 1 court.
"It's a good first conference win," head coach Chris Hoover said. "I look forward to getting a few more wins. We had to pull Julia in singles because of an injured toe but it was nice for the other student-athletes to step-up and fill-in."
Illinois State swept Bradley of all six singles matches in two-sets.
Esker now maintains a five-match winning streak and a 10-3 dual singles record after sweeping Kennedy Scott, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 5 singles court. Following Esker's lead, Maack defeated Jessica Buterbaugh at the No. 4 singles court making it her fourth-straight win.
The Redbirds will continue conference play this Sunday March 28, when they host Saint Louis. The first serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.
