Redbirds Clinch Second at the MIC Championships

DENTON, Texas - The Illinois State gymnastics team finished in second place in the 2010 Midwest Independent Conference (MIC) Championship meet Saturday evening in Denton, Texas. The Redbirds finished with a final score of 193.150 as ISU's Andrea Orris was named the MIC Senior Athlete of the Year. Texas Women's took first place with a score of 193.275, with Southeast Missouri State rounding out the top-three in third place with 193.100.

Head gymnastics coach Bob Conkling felt the team performed well overall in the intense competition.

"I thought our gymnasts did fantastic," said Conkling. "There were a few mistakes here and there, but there was nothing major that penalized us. The competition as a whole was very exciting as it was a close meet after each routine and it came down to the last routine."

Junior Erica Schick claimed second place in the floor exercise with a score of 9.800. Senior Hannah Deutsch followed up with a 9.725 tied score for fifth place. Illinois State added 48.025 to its running score after the floor exercise.

The Redbirds had a rocky start on the vault as the team had combined vault score of 48.600. Freshman Tori Sarantakis led the `Birds as she was a part of a five-way tie for fourth place with a score of 9.800.

The Redbirds picked up the momentum on the uneven bars as freshmen Kim Genereux achieved a third-place finish of 9.750 and Kim Caron finished in a four-way tie of 9.725 in fourth place. ISU was able to record 48.575 points to win the uneven bars event.

On the balance beam, sophomore Melissa Mann took over as she claimed first place with a score of 9.775. Senior Andrea Orris gave support with a three-way tie in third-place and a score of 9.675. The Redbirds stepped in front of the competition with a combined score of 47.950 on beam.

Schick took another spot on the podium for Illinois State as she claimed third place in the all-around with a total score of 38.650.

Five Illinois State gymnasts were awarded first-team all-conference honors at the conclusion of the meet Saturday evening. The Redbird gymnasts included: Kim Genereux, Melissa Mann, Andrea Orris and Erica Schick.

As the MIC Championship meet concluded the 2010 regular season for the Redbirds, ISU Gymnastics finished its season with a record of 13-and-7.
