Rubin Named to Valley Scholar-Athlete Team

ST. LOUIS - Illinois State junior Alex Rubin earned second-team All-Valley Scholar-Athlete honors Thursday, as released by the Missouri Valley Conference office. The team was selected by the league's sports information directors.

Rubin played in all 30 regular-season games for the Redbirds this season and started in the last 28. He averaged five points, 1.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. The finance major, who carries a 3.53 grade-point average, leads the Redbirds with a 3.67 assist-to-turnover ratio. He posted five double-digit scoring games this season, including a career-best 15 points against Morehead State in the BracketBusters game. Rubin has been named to the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll five times.

The Valley Scholar-Athlete First Team included Missouri State's Will Creekmore, Wichita State's Graham Hatch, Northern Iowa's Adam Koch, Bradley's Sam Maniscalco and Drake's Adam Templeton. Joining Rubin on the second team were Indiana State's Aaron Carter and Jordan Printy, Missouri State's Ryan Jehle and Drake's Ryan Wedel. Kerwin Dunham (Northern Iowa), Kaleb Korver (Creighton) and Pieter van Tongeren (Evansville) received honorable mention accolades.

Illinois State opens the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Friday night when the No. 3-seeded Redbirds face the No. 6 seed Indiana State in the quarterfinals at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, at 8:30 p.m.
