Women's Tennis to Compete in Florida for Spring Break

March 5, 2010

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's tennis team will travel to Orlando, Fla., this Saturday March 6, for their spring break trip. There, the Redbirds will compete against University of Connecticut (UCONN) on Sunday March 7, and South Dakota State (SDSU) on Tuesday March 9. Both matches will be held at the Lake Kane Tennis Center.

Most recently, Illinois State hosted Eastern Illinois on Feb. 26 when the Redbirds swept the Panthers, 7-0. ISU now holds a 27-1 all-time series record against the Eagles. The victory marks a 7-3 record on the season for the Redbirds. In singles, Illinois State holds a 37-23 record and a 22-7 record on the doubles court.

Seven of the doubles wins come from the Redbird's No. 3 doubles pair of Hannah Esker and Carmen Peters. The duo holds an 8-2 record on the season and is currently on a six-match winning streak. Their last victory was over Eastern Illinois' Shannon Brooks and Kristen Laird, 8-1.

Illinois State's first match of spring break (March 7) will be against UCONN. The match marks the first time the two teams have met. The Huskies currently mark a 0-4 record on the year after falling to Cincinnati, 4-3. The second match of break will be against SDSU, which will be another new team the Redbirds will compete against. The Coyotes hold a 1-1 record on the season after a loss to Augustana, 1-8.

"We're ready to get outside and compete some more," head coach Chris Hoover said. "We want to start playing our sport the way it's meant to be played, outside. We're looking forward to playing against these teams because we've never played them before and it's fresh competition."

Sunday's match against UCONN is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
