ORLANDO, Fla. -
- Hannah Esker and Carmen Peters continued on an eight-match winning streak Sunday March 7, helping the Illinois State women's tennis team defeat the University of Connecticut (UCONN), 7-0. The victory marks the Redbird's third win in a row and improves their season record to 8-3. Head coach Chris Hoover is excited the team opened their spring break trip with a win.
"It was a good way to start," said Hoover. "You never know what you're going to get with these spring break matches against teams you've never played. We expected a fight but we came out and handled things routinely."
Opening the day in doubles, Peters and Esker defeated Lauren Wilmarth and Emily Herb at the No. 3 court, 8-3. With the win, the duo holds a 9-2 record on the season and marks its eighth match straight. At the No. 2 court Arianne Maack and Aniko Kiss swept Alli Compitiello and Abby McKeon, 8-0. Julia Zubkova and Franziska Steinhardt defeated Kelly LoRusso and Katie Moritz at the No. 1 doubles court, 8-3. The victory improves the duo's record to 9-2 on the season.
"I thought singles was great," said Hoover. "Down the line everyone did a great job. The win was a great way to start the break. Julia fought hard today and the heat didn't make it easier."
In singles action, Zubkova was the last Redbird standing as she battled against Alli Compitiello at the No. 2 court. The match went on for two and a half hours but Zubkova came out with a win, 7-5, 6-2.
Illinois State will wrap up their spring break action against South Dakota State on Tuesday March 9. The first serve is set for 9 a.m. at the Lake Cane Tennis Center.
