Two of Illinois State's doubles teams improved to a 9-2 record on the season as the Redbirds wrapped up their spring break with a victory against South Dakota State University (SDSU), 7-0, Tuesday, March 9. Of the two doubles teams, Hannah Esker and Carmen Peters continue on a nine-match winning streak with the win.
Esker and Peters sealed the doubles point for ISU with a defeat at the No. 3 court against Carrie Jansen and Katie Elfison, 8-1. The pair has gone undefeated at the No. 3 court for their past nine matches and improves to a 9-2 record on the season.
Also continuing a 9-2 doubles record this season are Julia Zubkova and Franziska Steinhardt. The duo claimed the first Redbird doubles point of the day after sweeping Bethany Goeden and Bryna Nasenbeny, 8-0, at the No. 1 court.
At the No. 2 court was the pair of Natalia Lech and Maria Occhipinti who defeated Caitlin Brannen and Megan McDougall, 8-4.
"I thought it was great today that everyone got a chance to play," head coach Chris Hoover said. "We worked everyone into the line-up and it was very successful. I thought Julia did a nice job today. She was moving all over the court in doubles and quick on her feet in singles. Hannah and Carmen are unstoppable and it's great to see them go undefeated for nine matches straight."
In singles play, Illinois State claimed the point at each court. Hoover decided to switch the Redbird line-up for the No. 5 and 6 courts. With the win already in favor of the Redbirds, Sarah Streitz and Stefanie Youngberg both claimed victories. Youngberg defeated Carrie Jansen at the No. 5 court, 6-1, 6-3, while Streitz bested Nellie Bloomberg, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 6 court.
"It was nice to see Sarah and Stefanie succeed in their singles matches today," Hoover said. "The singles line-up worked out well and to have each student-athlete play during a match and be so successful was great."
Illinois State will return to the court Sunday March 14, against Illinois-Chicago at 1 p.m. Location TBA.
