The Illinois State women's tennis team is geared up for a weekend of Missouri Valley Conference matches as they host Evansville on Saturday April 3 and Southern Illinois on Sunday April 4. The Redbirds hold an 11-4 record on the spring season and go 1-0 in conference play.
"Were excited to see what we can do against Evansville," head coach Chris Hoover said. "I look to carry the momentum from last weekend into this weekends conference line-ups. "We have a great series against [Evansville] and we're ready to get playing."
Last week, Illinois State completed its non-conference portion of the schedule in a dual meet win over the St. Louis Billikens, 5-2, and began its conference season with a win over the Bradley Braves, 7-0.
Senior Julia Zubkova and sophomore Franziska Steinhardt have contributed several wins for ISU at the No. 1 doubles court. The Redbird duo holds a 12-3 dual doubles record on the year. Overall, Illinois State holds a 33-11 dual doubles record.
Illinois State leads the all-time series over Evansville 15-0 since their women's tennis team first joined the Valley in 1995. The last time the two teams met was on April 19, 2009 when the Redbirds swept the Purple Aces, 7-0. Most recently, Evansville lost to Southern Illinois in their first conference match of the season, 6-1. The Purple Aces now hold an 8-4 record on the year and go 0-1 in Valley play.
The all-time series between Illinois State and Southern Illinois is tied,15-15. The last match-up between the Redbirds and the Salukis was on April 18, 2009 when Southern Illinois tied up the series with a 5-2 defeat over ISU. Of late, Southern Illinois defeated Evansville, 5-2, and now holds a 1-0 Valley record.
Both matches will be held at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill. Saturday's match against Evansville will begin at 1 p.m., and Sunday's match against Southern Illinois at 10 a.m. Both times are weather permitting. Live stats for each conference match can be found at the link below.
