Illinois State Softball Hosts Indiana State in Mid-Week Match Up

NORMAL, Ill. –After winning the three-game series against Missouri Valley Conference rival Southern Illinois, the Illinois State softball team will continue MVC play as it hosts Indiana State. The Redbirds and the Sycamores will face off in a mid-week match up Wednesday afternoon at the Marian Kneer Softball Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Indiana State (16-25, 2-14 MVC) heads into Wednesday’s game after defeating conference foe Bradley, 3-2, in 10 innings Sunday. The Sycamores are led by Bailey Wittenauer, who is batting a .279 and leads the team with 18 runs and 34 hits


Illinois State (24-14, 12-3 MVC) has dominated the all-time series against Indiana State, owning a 52-game advantage, 65-13, over the Sycamores. Earlier this season, the Redbirds swept the Sycamores in a doubleheader in Terre Haute, Ind. Wednesday’s game will be the final game of the three-game series.


At the plate, Illinois State is led by Kara Nelson, who leads the team and the Valley with a .432 batting average. The junior second baseman also leads the team with 38 runs and 57 hits. Another strong presence at the plate is junior third baseman Abby Olson, whose .829 slugging percentage and 14 homers lead all ISU batters. Olson has the second-best batting average in the Valley with a .387. Nelson and Olson lead four offensive categories in the Valley.


The Redbirds' pitching staff owns a combined 3.99 ERA entering the mid-week contest. ISU is holding opposing batters to a .240 batting average. Megan Warner and Jordan Birch each grabbed a win this weekend against Southern Illinois. Birch improved her record 12-6, while Warner threw a no-hitter Saturday and improved her record to 10-7.
