WICHITA, Kan. - Sophomore Hannah Esker improved her winning streak to twelve to help the Illinois State women's tennis team advance to the semifinals of the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships after defeating Creighton, 5-0, Friday, at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex in Wichita, Kan. The match was originally scheduled for 9 a.m., but due to a rain delay the match started at 11 a.m.

"We were delayed two hours this morning and it was a little hard on the student-athletes with waiting," head coach Chris Hoover said. "We started a little slow but picked it up just in time to claim the win. We took care of business in singles and were a little slow in doubles play but we have the first match down and we're ready to play tomorrow."

Illinois State won the early doubles point with a win from Esker and Carmen Peters, who bested Creighton's Leesa Cadwallader and Sarah Cadwallader, 8-6, at the No. 3 position. Julia Zubkova and Franziska Steinhardt sealed the doubles point for the Redbirds with an 8-3 victory over Kelsey Schmidt and Anna Kirshenbaumon on the No. 1 doubles court.

Carrying the success into singles play, Ariane Maack was awarded the first singles point for Illinois State at the No. 4 singles position, after Creighton's Lindsey Erickson retired. Esker was quick to claim another point to put Illinois State up, 3-0. Esker defeated Mary Pat McMullan, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 6 singles position to collect her fourteenth victory straight this season. Julia Zubkova bested Lauren Mastro, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 3 singles position to give Illinois State a 4-0 advantage. Claiming the final match-point was Aniko Kiss on the No. 1 court, where she bested Tess Redding, 6-2, 6-3.

"We have another big game tomorrow and we need to come ready," Hoover said. "Hopefully we're getting well rested to be ready tomorrow morning."

Illinois State will face Southern Illinois in Saturday's semifinals round. The first serve is set for 10 a.m., at the Crestview Country Club. Live updates can be found at the link below.
