Box Score

NORMAL, Ill. - Ty Wiesemeyer knocked two singles and crashed into the wall in foul territory to make a highlight catch down the left field line, but Wichita State's Jordan Cooper struck out 10 in eight shutout innings while leading the Shockers to a 9-0 win over Illinois State at Duffy Bass Field Friday.

Cooper defeated the Redbirds for the third time in the last three seasons - all shutouts and has not allowed a run to Illinois State in 23 innings. In all three meetings, Illinois State starter Corey Maines has been on the losing end. Maines was hit seven times in five innings during Friday night's game and surrendered seven runs.

Tyler Grimes drove in Wichita State's first run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning, but the Shockers did their most damage with a two-run fourth and four runs in the fifth to build a 7-0 lead. Redbird reliever Jim Sajewich held Wichita State scoreless in the sixth, before the Shockers scratched across an unearned run in the seventh. Wichita State added its ninth run in the top of the ninth on a solo home run by Preston Springer.

Springer finished the contest 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Cody Lassley and Johnny Coy each had two hits for the Shockers also.

Illinois State's Kevin Tokarski reached base twice, including a single in the eighth to extend his current team-high hitting streak to six games. Jake Thornton and Ryan Court each collected hits, as the Redbirds were limited to just five as a team.

Saturday's 2 p.m. game will be televised across Kansas and the Kansas City metropolitan area on Kansas 22 and Time Warner Cable, and feature Illinois State's Brad Sorkin (3-1, 2.84) and Wichita State left-hander Josh Smith (4-2, 3.86).
