Broadway Receives 2010 Janyth Aellig Endowment

June 30, 2010

NORMAL, Ill. - So much of the success of Illinois State Athletics can be attributed to the loyalty and passion of Redbird fans. They fill the stands, both on the Illinois State campus and on the road, to cheer loud and hard for their Redbirds. Janyth Aellig's love of Illinois State led to the creation of an endowed scholarship in her memory. Redbird women's basketball junior guard Katie Broadway has been named the recipient of the 2010 Janyth Aellig Endowed Scholarship.

"Katie Broadway is a great selection for the Janyth Aellig Endowed Scholarship," head coach Stephanie Glance said. "Katie is a strong student and a person who demonstrates great character. She excels both on and off the court and strives for excellence in all that she does."

Broadway appeared in 31 games last season, starting the last 13, and led the team in three-point field goals (56), three-point field goal attempts (133) and three-point field goal percentage (.421). After missing the first five games of the year with a broken wrist, Broadway score 34 points over a two-game span, shooting 12-of-19 from the field, including 10-of-14 from three-point range. She scored a career-high 20 points, making six three-pointers, at Indiana State.

"It is an extreme privilege to be chosen as the recipient of the Janyth Aellig Endowed Scholarship," Broadway said. "We are blessed to have such wonderful and dedicated fans at Illinois State. Their support and enthusiasm provide great confidence and energy to our women's basketball program. I am both humbled and honored to accept this award in her name."

Broadway receiving a scholarship in honor of a loyal Redbird fan is fitting since she provided Redbird fans with one of the most thrilling moments of the season in the WNIT over Illinois. Trailing by one point in the final seconds, Broadway grabbed an offensive rebound to extend ISU's final possession, then took a pass from Nicolle Lewis and knocked down the game-winning three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining.

The Janyth Aellig Endowed Scholarship is named in honor of the avid Redbird women's basketball and volleyball fan. Jan, and her husband, Fred, had several seasons where they attended every Redbird contest - home and away - in both sports. When Jan passed away in 1997, Fred and a group of more than 50 friends and family members began the endowment. It is awarded annually to a deserving volleyball or women's basketball student-athlete.

The Janyth Aellig Endowed Scholarship is one of 23 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors.
