NORMAL, Ill. -
Former Illinois State basketball player Roberto Fortes will be one of only approximately 300 players competing for the 2010 FIBA World Championships, which begins this weekend in Kayseri, Turkey, as he suits up for his native country of Angola.
Angola begins the world championship Sunday, when it faces Serbia in the opening contest for both teams. Angola will continue the round-robin format in Group A and will play Jordan, Argentina, Germany and Australia throughout the week. All games are available to watch on ESPN3, and some will be available on the ESPN family of networks.
Fortes lettered two seasons for the Redbirds, 2006-07, after transferring from Daytona Beach Community College. He played in 51 games at Illinois State with 18 starting assignments. Fortes averaged 4.5 points per game during his career, along with 1.5 rebounds per contest.
His most memorable game as a Redbird came during the 2005-06 season. At Miami (Ohio), in a BracketBusters matchup, Fortes tossed in a career-high 23 points on a 7-for-11 shooting from three-point range in a 51-49 loss to the RedHawks.
