Illinois State (3-0) beat host Oregon State (0-3), 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18) to win the Corvallis Invitational as the only team to win all three matches. Illinois State is 3-0 to start a season for the first time since 1992, when the Redbirds started the year 6-0.
Senior Mallory Leggett led Illinois State with 17 kills and only three errors on 35 attacks for a hitting percentage of .400. She was named tournament MVP, recording 50 kills, 39 digs, seven blocks and a .255 hitting percentage over the three matches.
"It's great to start 3-0. It has been almost 20 years since that has happened," said head coach Melissa Myers. "We understand it is just a start, though, so we will enjoy the rest of this weekend and get ready to move forward with four matches next week. Mallory stepped up the entire tournament and tonight she handled herself really well against a strong block of Oregon State. She was well deserving of the MVP award."
Freshman Shannon McGlaughlin recorded 13 kills and a .322 hitting percentage. She also earned all-tournament team recognition with 43 kills and 26 digs. Junior Tabitha Visk logged a season-high seven kills. Junior Kristin Stauter had 44 set-assists and a career-high five kills.
Kills by Leggett and Visk and an Oregon State error gave ISU a 12-11 lead in the first set, but the Beavers quickly took back the lead for good with a 5-1 run. Three kills and a block put the Beavers ahead, 22-16, and they finished off the set with three more kills. Oregon State was extremely efficient in the set, recording 15 kills and just three errors on 31 attacks for a .387 hitting percentage. Jill Sawatzky and Kelsey Zimmerman combined for 11 kills for OSU. Stauter had four kills on four attacks in the set.
Illinois State chipped away at a four-point deficit in the second set and a Stauter kill put the `Birds ahead, 11-10. Leggett then recorded four-straight kills to fuel five unanswered points that put ISU up, 17-11. Oregon State then chipped away to pull within a point, 22-21, but the Beavers committed three errors to give ISU the set, 25-22.
Megan McBride served three-straight aces as Oregon State jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the third set. ISU bounced back to pull within a point, 12-11. A kill by senior Katie Culbertson and two kills from McGlaughlin tied the set at 17. An OSU error and a service ace by junior Laura Wakefield gave ISU its first lead of the set, 19-18. Three more points stretched the lead to four points and later senior Hailey Kelley and Leggett won it for the Redbirds with a kill each. ISU recorded 14 kills and a .243 hitting percentage in the set.
Leggett recorded the first three kills of the fourth set for ISU and five-straight points put ISU on top, 9-7. McGlaughlin had three kills and an ace as ISU's lead reached five points, 19-14.Kelley logged two kills and Visk drove home the match-clinching kill to give ISU the victory, 25-18. The Redbirds had 16 kills and a season-high .462 hitting percentage in the set.
Illinois State hosts Loyola-Chicago in the first home match of 2010 Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
