ISU Earns Third-Straight Sweep With Win Over Texas Tech

FT. COLLINS, Colo. - Illinois State recorded its third-consecutive sweep by beating Texas Tech (25-20, 25-13, 25-15) in commanding fashion at the Rams Volleyball Classic Presented by PVHS Saturday morning. The Redbirds had a dominating offensive performance, recording 45 kills and a .348 hitting percentage in the three sets.

Senior Mallory Leggett led the way with 14 kills for the Redbirds. Senior Katie Culbertson had nine and junior Tabitha Visk and freshman Shannon McGlaughlin had eight apiece. Leggett (.407), Culbertson (.429) and Visk (.500) combined for 31 kills and just seven errors. Junior Kristin Stauter had 38 set-assists and sophomore Jenny Menendez had 14 digs to lead the Redbirds.

Illinois State led the first set by four points, 8-4, early on. Texas Tech pulled within a point, 13-12, but Illinois State reeled off five-straight points to stretch its lead to 18-12. ISU reached set-point with a six point lead, but surrendered two points. A Texas Tech service error gave the set to the Redbirds, 25-20. Leggett had six kills in the set and ISU had a 14-9 kill advantage.

ISU lead early again in the second set, 8-5. The Redbirds then went on an 8-1 run to build a double-digit lead for the first time on the season, 16-6. Culbertson had a pair of kills during the run. A 5-1 run for the Redbirds, highlighted by a pair of kills and a block, stretched the lead to 23-9. Once the Redbirds reached set-point, Northwestern again strung together a run with four-straight points. McGlaughlin finished the set with a kill to give ISU its biggest set win of the season, 25-13. ISU had 16 kills and just two errors for a hitting percentage of .483.

Illinois State raced out to a 5-0 lead in the third set. Back-to-back kills by Leggett and a Visk kill extended the lead to 14-7. Leggett, McGlaughlin, Culbertson and Stauter each had kills to fuel a 7-2 run that put ISU ahead by 10 again, 22-12. A block and kills by Visk and McGlaughlin ended the set and the match, 25-15.

Illinois State closes out the Rams Volleyball Classic against No. 15 Colorado State at 8 p.m.
