Women's Tennis Successful at St. Louis Invite

St. Louis Invite Results Get Acrobat Reader

The Illinois State women's tennis team finished its second day at the St. Louis Billiken Invitational Saturday, September 11. The team competed against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and came away with six out of seven singles matches and all three doubles matches.

Head coach Chris Hoover was very pleased with the team's performance after getting off to a rough start against Saint Louis yesterday in the first round.

"Today was much better," Hoover said. The team fought hard against SIU-e and it was an exciting match. They are all starting to really play good tennis and are getting better day to day."

Junior Aniko Kiss started off the winning streak defeating Carli Connors, 7-5, 6-1. Sophomore Ariane Maack came away with a win in straight sets against Laura Horning, 6-0, 6-0, while freshman Gabby Phillips beat Maggie Boeckman, 6-3, 7-5. Freshman Carolina Abello won against Rachel Webb, 6-2, 6-4, and junior Hannah Esker defeated Kristin Stivers, 7-5, 6-3, with sophomore Stefanie Youngberg defeating Joanna Corkern, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles play the team of Kiss and Maack won against Connors and Horning, 8-0, while Abello and Esker defeated Boeckman and Webb, 8-6. In the final match, freshman Heather Nisbet and teammate Phillips beat Miller and Stivers, 8-4.

Play continues and concludes at the St. Louis Billiken Invite Sunday.
