The Illinois State women's tennis team concluded their first tournament in the 2010-11 season Sunday at the St. Louis Billiken Invite. The Redbrids had a rough start in the beginning of the tournament but came out strong against Nova Southeastern in the end.
Junior Aniko Kiss came out on top defeating Dominique Wimmier, 6-0, 7-5, and sophomore Ariane Maack won against Oksana Krutiyenko, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Gabby Phillips beat Austin Lavallii in the third set, 6-4, 6-7, 10-5, while freshman Carolina Abello came away with a win against Federica Longo, 6-3, 6-2. Junior Hannah Esker defeated Daria Burobina, 7-5, 6-1, with Heather Nisbet rounding out play and defeating Kamryn Blackwood, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles play the team of Maack and Abello beat Lavalli and Lindsley, 8-4, while Esker and Heather Nisbet defeated Longo and Blackwood, 9-7.
Although play on Friday did not go as well as was hoped, head coach Chris Hoover was very pleased with the results of the tournament.
"This was a good weekend," Hoover said. "We started out slow but picked it up and played real well to finish strong."
The Redbirds continue their fall season when they travel to Muncie, Ind. next weekend to compete in the Ball State Invite September 17th-19th.
