NORMAL, Ill. - Defending her home turf for the first time, Illinois State freshman Brianna Cooper pulled out all of the stops Sunday, as she took hold of the first place position after firing a nine-over-par 222 (76-71-75), at the Redbird Invitational. The Redbirds were able to hold on to the first-place position it had going into the third round and carded a 61-over-par 913 (301-302-310).

"I came in here without any expectations and didn't feel like I had anything to prove," Cooper said. "I'm going to take this season tournament-by-tournament and shot-by-shot and see where that leaves me. The biggest thing to me is to stay in the moment and focus on things as they come."

Senior Terra Miller (79-75-74) and sophomore Katie Jean (73-79-76) led the upperclassmen as both Redbirds tied for sixth place after shooting a 15-over par 228. Freshmen Jordyn Wyzgowski (79-77-85) and Carlee Cossell (79-82-80) gave support to the `Birds after tying in 25th place with a 28-over-par 241.

"This is an exciting start to our season," head coach Darby Sligh said. "I don't think anyone expected us to perform this well after graduating six seniors. We have such a young team, and I think that's the most exciting part of how we finished, they played and finished like seniors. Our freshman in the starting lineup played like upperclassmen today, even if they were nervous they didn't show it. Today is a testament of what our team is capable of doing."

Wichita State held second place after carding a 67-over-par 919 (306-309-304), finishing 6 strokes behind ISU. Missouri State's Catherin Dolan tried to close in on Cooper's lead with an 11-over-par 224 (74-74-76) and second-place finish. Lauren Hassel of Wichita State finished one stroke shy of second with a 12-over-par 225 (77-75-73).

The Redbirds move into a week of practice before traveling to Hawkeye Country Saturday for the Hawkeye Invitational.
