NORMAL, Ill. -
Illinois State senior forward Emily Hanley has been named the recipient of the 2010 Robert and Laura Garrett Endowed Scholarship, as announced by the athletics department Wednesday.
The Garret scholarship was established in 2008 by Robert and Laura Garrett. The scholarship is for women's basketball and volleyball, long-time loves of both Bob and Laura. The scholarship is awarded annually to a member of the women's basketball team or the women's volleyball team.
"Receiving the Garrett Endowed Scholarship is a tremendous honor," said Hanley. "The support we receive from our fans is unparalleled and a huge part of our success on the court. My teammates and I are so appreciative of the support the fans gives us when we play and in our academic endeavors through endowed scholarships."
Hanley appeared in all 36 games for the Redbirds last season, averaging 5.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. She was third on the team in field goal percentage (.486), fourth in rebounding and fifth in scoring. She scored 10 points, making a career-best two three-pointers, at Ball State and had a career-high 10 rebounds two games later at Illinois-Chicago. She scored in double-figures in back-to-back games with a team-high 10 points against Creighton and 11 points at SIU Edwardsville. Hanley scored a season-high 14 points and had nine rebounds, coming short of her first-career double-double, against Southern Illinois.
"Emily Hanley is the epitome of excellence," said ISU head coach Stephanie Glance. "She strives to be the best in all that she does and excels as a student, as a player, and as a person. She is a class act in every way and is well-deserving of this honor."
The Bloomington native, who transferred to Illinois State from Eastern Michigan in 2007, has a 3.69 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) in exercise science. She earned a 4.0 GPA in the Spring 2010 semester.
The Garrett Endowed Scholarship is one of 23 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors.
