Illinois State (9-3, 1-0 MVC) swept Indiana State (8-6, 0-1 MVC) in straight-sets (25-23, 25-20, 25-19) in the first Missouri Valley Conference match for both teams. Senior Mallory Leggett led ISU with 17 kills.
Leggett's 17 kills came on 37 attacks and she had just four errors for a hitting percentage of .351. She also had 11 digs. Seniors Katie Culbertson and junior Tabitha Visk each had nine kills and hit above .300. Freshman Shannon McGlaughlin had seven kills and 11 digs. As a team, Illinois State had 52 kills and a .351 hitting percentage.
Junior Kristin Stauter recorded 38 set-assists and four kills. Sophomore Jenny Menendez led the Redbirds with 17 digs.
"It's always great to win on the road, especially in conference play," said ISU head coach Melissa Myers. "Indiana State executed extremely well after losing their setter to injury in a match last night. With that happening, we knew they were going to look a little different. The first set was well executed on both sides, and we played a little sloppier in the second and third set. We need to be a little sharper as the match goes on. Mallory had another good match and she seems to always play well against Indiana State. When she got a good set, she was hitting strong and putting the ball down right to the floor."
Illinois State led 13-7 midway through the first set and a kill by Stauter made the lead 21-16. After a timeout, Indiana State hung tough with the Redbirds, scoring twice when the Redbirds had set-point. Leggett finished off the set with a kill, 25-23. ISU had 15 kills and two errors in the opening set.
Seven kills helped ISU take an 11-4 lead in the second set. Two errors on the Sycamores put the Redbirds at 20 first, 20-12. After three-straight Redbird points, Indiana State capitalized on four ISU attack errors to pull within four points. Visk and McGlaughlin recorded kills to win it for the Redbirds, 25-20.
The Redbirds jumped out to a big early lead again in the third set, 11-3, on the strength of eight kills. ISU maintained at least a five-point edge the rest of the way and put the match away on a Leggett kill, 25-19. The Redbirds had a match-high 19 kills and .366 hitting percentage in the third set.
Illinois State will play two matches at the Miami Best Western Sycamore Inn Invitational Saturday. The Redbirds take on Miami (Ohio) at 9:30 a.m. and DePaul at 4 p.m.
