MUNCIE, Ind. - Junior Hannah Esker led the Illinois State women's tennis team as it began its fall season Friday at the Ball State Invitational in Muncie, Ind.
Esker was victorious in both her first and second-round matches in Flight B singles. She defeated both opponents in straight-sets, while dropping only six games in the two matches combined.
Head coach Chris Hoover was impressed with Esker's performance.
"Hannah was the highlight of the day today," Hoover said. "I was really impressed with the way she played."
Sophomore Ariane Maack and the doubles combination of sophomore Stefanie Youngberg and freshman Ashton Nisbet were the only other Redbirds to win first-round matches.
Hoover hopes to see improvements from his team in Saturday's matches.
"I want to see more fight tomorrow," Hoover said." We need to be ready to compete right out of the gate and start doing that consistently if we're going to be successful."
The tournament will conclude Saturday at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
