LOUISVILLE, Ky. -

Illinois State men's golf moved into second place after the final round of competition at the Cardinal Intercollegiate, Tuesday, firing a four-under-par 860 (280-291-289). Of the 16 teams competing, the Redbirds finished just three strokes behind first-place finisher Miami (OH), which also shot 289 in the final round.

"This was a good team outing for us, where everyone contributed," head coach Ray Kralis said. "We are doing a good job of staying in the process and accepting outcomes; good or bad. That is becoming a strength of this team."

Leading the Redbirds was Eric Meier, who tied for fourth place after shooting a three-under-par 213 (66-75-72). Wils Hawn continued to impress as a freshman, as he finished tied for sixth place with a two-under-par 214 (70-72-72).

"We also had strong individual performances with both Meier and Hawn under par for the 54 holes," Kralis said. "When we get that combination of strong individual performances with contributions across the board, we are seeing how competitive we can be in any field. That is huge for the team's confidence, especially this early in the season."

Rounding out the Redbirds were Will Cullen tied in 21st place with a two-over-par 218 (73-74-71), Jeff Kellen tied in 32nd place with a four-over-par 220 (71-73-76) and Drew North sharing 44th place with a six-over-par (76-72-74).

ISU was one of five teams to card a sub-par tournament.

Finishing just ahead of Meier were Kennesaw State's Chad Wilson in third place with a five-under-par 212 (67-74-71) and Jeff Karlsson in second place after a five-under-par 211 (70-72-69). Leading the field of golfers was Marshall's Aaron Boggs with a six-under-par 210 (70-69-71).

The Redbirds return to campus to host the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate on Illinois State's campus, Oct. 2 and 3.
