ISU Softball Continues Fall Slate Against Heartland

Sept. 22, 2010

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State softball team will continue its fall schedule Thursday evening, by hosting Heartland Community College for a 6 p.m. contest at the Marian Kneer Softball Stadium.

The Redbirds played their second of eight fall games last Thursday against Lake Land. ISU and the Lakers played a seven-inning scrimmage that allowed both teams to simulate several different game situations.

"Heartland is coming off of another NJCAA Division II National Championship appearance," head coach Melinda Fischer said. "I am sure they have done a great job of replacing their graduated players from last season. We are going to play this as a scrimmage, similar to the game we had with Lake Land. Our goal every time we step on the field is to get a look at our team in many different situations."

Illinois State finished with an overall record of 32-20 last season and was selected for the NCAA Tournament. This season, the Redbirds will be led by seniors Kara Nelson and Abby Olson, who were honored with NFCA Third-Team All-American honors last spring.

The Redbirds will take to the road for the first time this fall when they travel to Madison, Wis., for a doubleheader with Wisconsin, Sunday, Sept. 26. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. with the second game to follow immediately after.
