Redbirds Finish First Day at Southern Illinois Competition

Sept. 24, 2010

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State swimming team competed in their first meet of the 2010-11 season, Friday in Carbondale, Ill. at the Saluki Miler Invitational, against Southern Illinois. The Redbirds had nine swimmers compete in the 1650-yard freestyle event and will compete again on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the 5k Open Water at Little Grassy Lake in Carbondale, Ill.

Head coach Steve Paska looked at the distance meet as a positive start to the season.

"Starting the season with the 1650-yard time trial event really helped gage where we are at the beginning stages of the season," Paska said. "I was very impressed with how the athletes maintained a solid pace throughout the race."

Senior Amy Schaefer achieved a personal best time of 17:56.89 for the 1650-yard freestyle. Sophomore transfer Tori Alland competed in her first meet as a Redbird. Alland finished first for the team, and second overall, with a time of 17:34.50.

"Tori has been training exceptionally well through the first three weeks of the season and negative-split her race," Paska said. "Overall, it was a very smart race for Tori."

The `Birds will continue Saturday with the 5K Open Water at Little Grassy Lake in Carbondale, Ill. where Evansville will join the Redbirds and Salukis. Little Grassy Lake will be set up as a 1250-meter course.
