Illinois State (11-5, 1-2 MVC) lost its second-consecutive Missouri Valley Conference match, falling to Missouri State (11-3, 3-1 MVC) in straight sets (22-25, 22-25, 19-25) Saturday night. Missouri State never trailed in the win.
Freshman Shannon McGlaughlin recorded double-digit kills for the second-consecutive match, leading the Redbirds with 13. Senior Mallory Leggett had eight kills and junior Tabitha Visk added six. Sophomore Jenny Menendez had 13 digs and junior Laura Wakefield added 12.
Missouri State had more kills (50) and only three more errors (18) than the Redbirds. Illinois State also committed seven service errors and four blocking errors.
Missouri State led 12-7 in the first set, but the Redbirds answered with five-straight points to tie the score at 17. The Redbirds used two kills, two Lady Bear errors and an ace by Visk to close the gap. After trading the next six points, Missouri State closed out the set with a 5-2 run to win it, 25-22.
Illinois State had to come from behind again in the second set, using three Missouri State attack errors and a Leggett kill to tie the score at 19. The two teams traded the next six points, but the Redbirds committed three errors to lose the set, 25-22.
Missouri State led from the start of the third set, using three kills to build a 5-1 lead. Three kills and an ace stretched the Lady Bears' lead to 13-8. Illinois State went on an 8-3 run to pull within a point, 16-15. Missouri State answered with a pair of 4-1 runs to take the set, 25-19, and complete the sweep.
Illinois State returns home to host Creighton Friday at 7 p.m.
