MUNCIE, Ind. - Junior Skip Span and freshman Mya Smith-Dennis wrapped up play at the Ball State Invitational in Muncie, Ind., Saturday.
Smith-Dennis defeated Cleveland State's Matt Ford, 3-6, 6-1; 1-0(7), in the consolation quarterfinals of White-Flight singles, before falling to Ball State's Austin Sansone in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-4.
Head coach Cris James feels his freshman improved as the tournament progressed.
"Mya got better as the weekend went on," James said. "This was a big learning experience for him. He found out that he really needs to compete in every match. He has a lot of upside, and I liked what I saw from him on Friday and Saturday."
In doubles action, Smith-Dennis and Span were defeated in Flight A quarterfinal play by Marquette's Otavio Perim and Thibault Troude, 8-4.
The Redbirds will take the court next weekend at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Seniors Timon Reichelt, Filip Miljevic and Matej Zlatkovic, and sophomore Alexander Pelaez will all be in action for ISU.
