LAWRENCE, Kan. -
In the first day of the Marilynn Smith Invitational at the Alvamar Country Club, the Redbirds finished the day in seventh place after carding a 50-over-par 626 (316-310).
"Today was a day of growth for us, but did not translate into scoring," head coach Darby Sligh said. "We are getting better at making pars and avoiding big numbers on the scorecard, but we are still throwing away countless numbers of careless shots. Once we begin converting our opportunities and taking advantage of less than perfect situations, we will start seeing both our team and individual scores drop dramatically."
Freshman Brianna Cooper led the `Birds after shooting a 10-over-par 154 (78-76), and finished the day tied for 17th place. Fellow freshman Jordyn Wyzgowski gave support as she tied for 22nd place with a 12-over-par 156 (79-77).
"Cooper showed us another solid couple of rounds, with Wyzgowski and Miller stepping up for us in round two," Sligh said. "We are looking forward to leaving it all out on the course tomorrow."
Senior Terra Miller (80-78) and junior Hannah Bachman (79-79) tied for 32nd place after both Redbirds shot 14-over-par.
Kansas leads the field of 12 teams with a 27-over-par 603 (313-290), with Nebraska just one stroke behind them with a 28-over-par 604 (303-301). Nebraska's Maddie Sheils guides the field of 68 golfers in first place with a two-under-par 142 (72-70)
Play continues Tuesday morning with the third and final round. Results will be made available at the conclusion of the tournament.
