State of Illinois Falls in Inaugural Illinois / Michigan Meet

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State gymnastics team took second place in the Inaugural Illinois vs. Michigan meet Sunday afternoon at Horton Field House. The state of Illinois fell to the state of Michigan, 382.350-382.000. Sophomore Kim Genereux took second place in the all-around competition (38.750) to lead the Redbirds.

Central Michigan led the entire meet finishing with a final total of 193.375. Illinois State finished in a close second with 192.025; its best finish as a team this season. Illinois-Chicago and Eastern Michigan placed third and fourth respectively scoring, 189.975-188.975.

Head coach Bob Conkling is excited about the team's progress and high scores.

"I was really happy with our performances today," Conkling said. "We didn't do perfect but our scores were much better than they have been so far this year."

Junior Melissa Mann took second place in the balance beam with a score of 9.775 followed by senior Hannah Deutsch who score 9.750, good enough for a third place finish. Senior Erica Schick scored a season best 9.800 on the uneven parallel bars, taking second place. Sophomore Apollonia Barrientos also scored a season best on the bars with a score of 9.700. Freshman Jenna Bossle took fourth place on the vault with a career best score of 9.700.

The Redbirds were strong on the floor led by Schick and Deutsch who tied for third with a score of 9.800. Genereux took fourth on the floor with a score of 9.775, a career best for the all-around athlete who also topped her career best for the all-around event.

"I think we're going to be fine the rest of the season after getting our heads up today," Conkling said.

The Redbirds will take the week off before taking on Denver next Sunday, Jan. 30 at 3 p.m. at Horton Field House.
