Jackie Carmichael recorded his third-career double-double performance and his first of the 2010-11 season, as the Illinois State men's basketball team topped Missouri Valley Conference rival Bradley, 79-78, in overtime Wednesday night in Peoria, Ill., powered by Austin Hill's 10 points during the extra period.
With the victory, the Redbirds are 2-8 in Valley play and 10-11 overall, while the Braves have a MVC record of 0-10 and an overall record of 6-15.
Carmichael led the Redbird offense with career-best 24 points, while Anthony Cousin added 14 points. Carmichael was the leading rebounder in the game with 17 boards, a career-high. Andrew Warren led Bradley's attack with 25 points and collected seven rebounds. Bradley outscored Illinois State 32-30 in the paint, while the Redbirds outrebounded the Braves 40-34.
The Braves jumped out to the early lead, opening the game on a 13-6 run heading into the first media timeout at the 15:53 mark. Bradley's Warren got things started for the Braves when he recorded back-to-back steals, turning both into layups. Illinois State finally got on the board with a jumper by Jon Ekey making the score 6-2 with 18:52 left in the first half.
The Braves went on an 8-0 run that lasted for 2:38 before Carmichael sank a free throw at the 10:32 mark to give Bradley a 23-9 advantage.
Despite being down by 15 points at the 11:42 mark, the Redbirds were not going to give up easily. Blake Mishler scored six-straight points for the Redbirds and cut the Braves' lead to six points, 28-22, with 2:28 remaining in the first half. Carmichael sank a jumper with five seconds left before the break to send the Redbirds into the locker room down by five points, 32-27.
Illinois State cut Bradley's lead to one point with 14:51 left in the game with a jumper by Mishler, 34-33. Bradley picked up momentum and went on an 11-0 run and increased its lead by 12 points, 45-33, with 9:25 left in the game.
After making two free throws and a quick layup, Cousin pulled the Redbirds within four points of the Braves, 61-57, with 1:12 left in the game. Wilkins sinks a three from the corner with 38 seconds left in the game to cut Bradley's lead to one, 61-60.
With 13.2 seconds left in regulation, ISU took its first lead of the game, 64-63, on a pair of free throws from Ekey. Carmichael blocked Dunson's shot at the other end of the court and was quickly fouled. Carmichael made his first free throw, but missed the second to give Illinois State a two-point lead, 65-63, with four seconds on the clock. With one second left in the game, Bradley's Will Egolf made two free throws to tie the game, 65-65, and force overtime.
Hill scored Illinois State's first six points in the overtime period, but the three-point shooting of Bradley's Warren kept the Braves in the game and gave BU a 78-77 lead with 19 seconds remaining in the overtime period. But with three seconds left, Hill was fouled and hit two crucial free throws to secure the Redbird win, 79-78.
The Redbirds return to action Sunday, Jan. 30, against Valley-rival Drake on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
