Redbirds Gear Up for Weekend of Competition

Jan. 28, 2011

NORMAL, Ill. - After months of competition and training, the Illinois State swimming and diving team will compete in their last two dual meets of the 2010-11 season Saturday, Jan. 29 and Sunday, Jan. 30. This is the team's final chance to compete before the Missouri Valley Conference Championships Feb. 17-19 in Carbondale, Ill.

The Redbirds will travel to Green Bay, Wis. on Saturday Jan. 29 to swim against the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix, Youngstown State Penguins and Illinois Institute of Technology. The meet will take place at Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium and is set to begin at 12 p.m. The team will then return to Normal, Ill. to compete in their last home dual meet of the season on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 11 a.m.

Head coach Steve Paska is looking forward to the level of competition for the weekend.

"This will be a challenging weekend in terms of the quick turnaround from competing in Green Bay on Saturday and then again at home on Sunday," Paska said. "I believe this swimming and diving team will be able to handle the challenge as we compete against a number of quality programs over the course of the two meets. This weekend gives us another chance to compete as we prepare for the MVC Championships coming up in February."

Diving coach Phil Hoffmann is preparing for the weekend meets and looking ahead to conference.

"This weekend we will compete against some very strong diving programs," Hoffmann said. "Bethany Olson, a diver from Northern Iowa, is one of the strongest divers in the conference and it will be good to be able to compete and prepare ourselves so close to conference."

Sunday's home meet will honor the seven seniors on the Redbird roster as they compete for the final time in Horton Pool. The meet will be streamed live on GoRedbirds.com.
