NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's golf team stands in sixth place following the first two rounds of the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate at the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University Saturday. The Redbirds ended the day with a team score of 605 (302-303). Defending champion Illinois leads the field with a score of 570 (285-285).

Head men's golf coach Ray Kralis believes that his team should be in a better position on their home course.

"Our lack of discipline, combined with faulty execution, negated our home course advantage today, and as a result, we need something special tomorrow to climb out of the hole we find ourselves in," Kralis said. "The golf course isn't yielding many birdies, and it proved to be a challenge for most of the field. We will need to be much sharper in our decision-making and in our commitment to conservative strategies in order to gain confidence as the round goes on."

Sophomore Wils Hawn led the Redbird team effort, finishing the day with a score of 151 (73-78), putting him in a tie for 23rd overall. He was followed by junior Ricky Hearden, who is tied for 29th place and recorded a score of 152 (80-72). Senior Eric Meier (76-77) and junior Ryan Murphy (77-76) ended their day tied for 37th with a score of 153. Freshman Jordan Fahel carded a score of 156 (76-80) to round out the Illinois State team effort.

Competing individually, junior Matt Solis recorded a team-best score of 147 (72-75) to place 10th overall. Junior Matt Hageman, also playing individually, ended his first two rounds with a score of 157 (82-75).

The final round of the Weibring Intercollegiate will begin Sunday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
