NORMAL, Ill. -
The Illinois State men's golf team ended the final round Sunday tied for seventh at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University. Individual competitor Matt Solis finished in seventh place overall, recording a score of 217 (72-75-70).
The Redbirds finished with an overall team score of 900 (302-303-295). Illinois took home the team title with a final score of 852 (285-285-282). The Illini have won the Weibring Intercollegiate four of the last five years.
Head men's golf coach Ray Kralis was disappointed with his squad's performance on their home course.
"It was a tough outing for us," Kralis said. "I felt that with coming home and taking steps in our preparation the last couple weeks, I expected us to perform quite a bit better than what we did. Matt obviously had a good outing, finishing in the top ten as an individual. We have to stay disciplined in our preparation and do the things that will make us better come spring. When you can't defend your home turf, then I think you're getting some feedback as to where you stack up in the conference. We clearly have some work to do."
Junior Ricky Hearden paced the Redbird team effort with a score of 224 (80-72-72), which placed him in a tie for 23rd individually. Senior Eric Meier followed up with a score of 225 (76-77-72), tying for 28th in the field. Sophomore Wils Hawn carded a 226 (73-78-75) to end the weekend tied for 31st overall. Junior Ryan Murphy and freshman Jordan Fahel turned in scores of 229 (77-76-76) and 234 (76-80-78), respectively.
Competing individually, junior Matt Hageman ended the tournament with a tally of 232 (82-75-75).
The Redbirds will return to the course Oct. 10-11 at the Firestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.
