Got 16?' Seminar Presented at Bloomington and Pekin H.S.

Oct. 25, 2011

NORMAL, Ill. - Potential collegiate student-athletes are encouraged to attend one of two free "Got 16?" NCAA initial eligibility-seminars, presented by the Illinois State Athletics Compliance Office. The first "Got 16?" seminar is Thursday, Oct. 27, in the Bloomington High School auditorium at 6:30 p.m. in Bloomington, Ill., followed by another presentation Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the Pekin High School Theater at 7 p.m. in Pekin, Ill.

Illinois State Associate Athletics Director for Compliance Cindy Harris and her staff are in their eighth year presenting this seminar to Central Illinois High School students. Harris says "Got 16?" is critically important for high school-level student-athletes who desire to compete at the NCAA Division I or II level.

"At the seminar, we will detail the many processes and requirements that are mandated by NCAA rules for initial-eligibility," Harris said. "And because initial-eligibility is tied to the receipt of an athletic scholarship and participating in competition at these levels, understanding this information is not only important, but it's important that it be taken in early in a student's high school career."

The "Got 16?" seminar is specifically geared toward high school student-athletes, high school and club coaches, parents, athletics directors and guidance counselors. Topics that will be presented include NCAA core courses, test scores (ACT and SAT), registering for the NCAA Eligibility Center, official visits, strategies and perspectives and improving test scores.

"We'd like to emphasize that the seminars are open to anyone, from any school, in and around the vicinity of Pekin and the Bloomington/Normal area," Harris said. "We hope everyone who wants or needs this information will come."

This event has been approved by the Illinois State Department Board of Education to award two Continuing Professional Development Unit (CPDU) credits for attendance at this event.
