The Illinois State women's basketball team is set to host Missouri-St. Louis Tuesday in an exhibition game at 7:05 p.m. in Redbird Arena. The game against the Tritons is the only exhibition game the Redbirds will play before the 2011-12 regular season.
Illinois State returns eight letterwinners from the 2010-11 team that advanced to the WNIT semifinals for the third-straight season and set a school record, after posting its first undefeated ISU regular season at home in program history. The Redbirds lost five starters from that team, but return a solid core of contributors who are ready to step into new roles.
Senior Katie Broadway is the team's top returning scorer, averaging 11.9 points per game last season. She was an All-MVC Second Team selection and recorded 22 starts during the 2010-11 season. Broadway led the Redbirds in three-point field goals (66), three-point field goal percentage (34.7) and ranked second in scoring (11.9 ppg).
Illinois State was picked to finish sixth in the 2011-12 MVC Preseason Poll, announced at the conference's annual media day Oct. 25. The Redbirds received 224 points in the poll voted on by the league's coaches, SID's and media. Of the 29 preseason polls in conference history, the Redbirds have only been picked to finish out of the top-five 10 times. ISU was picked sixth just once before, in 1998-99, and finished ninth in the conference regular-season standings.
Missouri-St. Louis is an NCAA Division II institution and competes in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Tritons were 10-17 last season. UMSL was picked to finish fifth in the GLVC West Division in the preseason coaches' poll. Caitlyn Moody enters her senior season ranked fourth in program history in three-pointers attempted (425) and blocked shots (45) and seventh in field goals attempted (911) and three-pointers made (127). She started all 27 games and led the team with 13.9 points per game.
