Redbirds Fight For Third Place Overall at MVC Championships

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - On the second day of play in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships today, the Illinois State women's tennis team moved into position to secure the third place spot in three singles flights. The team also won several back-draw doubles and singles matches, moving into the consolation finals.

Head Coach Chris Hoover is ready to begin assessing the weekend's play and grow.

"It hasn't been a great weekend, but we will learn from this," Hoover said. "I think we're just as motivated as ever to prove that this weekend isn't really who we are or what we're really capable of."

In doubles, team captain Hannah Esker and partner Heather Nisbet defeated both of their oppontents in the flight two consolation matches, including Dzakula and Raatz of Evansville, 8-4 and Southern Illinois's Dien and Tomishima, 9-7.Stefanie Youngberg and Gabby Phillips partnered to win both of their matches in the same flight. The duo beat Richardson and Fifer of Evansivlle, 8-1, and Drake's Boyd and Aragon, 8-5.Krizman and Demos of Drake beat Aniko Kiss and partner Phyllis Tigges, 8-2.

Singles play continued with Esker beating Southern Illinois's Natasha Tomishima, 1-6, 6-2(8). Youngberg fell to Kelsey Schmidt of Creighton, 6-4, 7-5, and Siera Hasler of Southern Illinois defeated Ashton Nisbet, 6-2, 6-4. Kiss ended her winning streak on Saturday to Melanie Delsart of Southern Illinois, 6-0, 6-1. Tigges also posted a loss to Drake's Manca Krizman, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Heather Nisbet fell to Amanda Aragon of Drake, 6-2, 6-4. The three student-athletes will fight for third place on Sunday.

Play is scheduled to begin on Sunday at 9 a.m.
