FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Nic Moore tried to shoot Illinois State back into the game and finished with a team-high 13 points, but the Redbirds couldn't overcome 21 turnovers and 16 personal fouls by their four post players in a 55-47 season- opening loss to Fresno State at the Save Mart Center Friday night.

The Redbirds fall to 0-1 on the season, while Fresno State starts its 2011-12 campaign 1-0.

Moore also added four assists, without a turnover, in 32 minutes of play, while Jackie Carmichael was the only other ISU player to score double figures. He finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Redbirds had a slow start offensively, hitting only three of their first 16 shots. As a result, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 20-9 lead. However, ISU chipped away thanks to a pair of threes from freshman Moore and a runner by John Wilkins in the final seconds of the first half to tie the game, 26-26, at the break.

In the second half, ISU jumped out to a 38-34 lead after a banked three-pointer by Wilkins with 14:35 left in the contest. Fresno State responded with a 7-0 run, including five points by Kevin Olekaibe, and held a 41-38 advantage at the 12:14 mark. The offense in the game completely stalled for both teams, as the two squads combined for eight points over an eight minute span.

The Redbirds crept to within two points, 46-44, when Moore pulled up for a jumper with 2:15 left on the clock. Following a basket in the paint from FSU's Kevin Foster, Moore again got the Redbirds closer with a three-point basket and ISU trailed, 48-47, with 1:28 left. Olekaibe drove the lane and drew the blocking foul from Jon Ekey and converted the three-point play to give the Bulldogs a 51-47 edge. The Redbirds missed a pair of threes on the offensive end, while FSU's Jonathan Wills sank four-straight free throws down the stretch for the final margin, 55-47.

Olekaibe was the only Bulldog in double digits with a game-high 18 points. The Redbirds shot 30 percent from the field and 33.3 percent on threes.

Illinois State will host SIU Edwardsville on Thursday, Nov. 17 for the Redbirds' home opener on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. The first game of the 2011 Cancun Challenge will tipoff at 7:05 p.m.
