Dec. 3, 2011

Final Stats Postgame Interview with Stephanie Glance Play-by-Play Highlights

TEMPE, Ariz. - Junior guard Candace Sykes led the Illinois State women's basketball team with 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals, but her effort wasn't enough, as the Redbirds fell to Arizona State, 77-54, Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena. Sykes' performances over the weekend placed her on the all-tournament team.

Katie Broadway added 11 points, as Katy Winge added eight, tying a career-high. Maddie Oliver led all rebounders with eight boards. ISU shot 33 percent from the field, while ASU shot 49 percent. The Sun Devils (6-1) outrebounded the Redbirds (4-3) by two, 36-34.

"The game was really determined at the beginning of the first half and the beginning of the second half and in between there we did some good things at times," head coach Stephanie Glance said. "To finish the game rebounding with them pretty consistently is a good stat, but there were other stats that didn't help us, our turnovers. We just didn't execute today, and they were a good team."

Arizona State made 14-straight points and held Illinois State scoreless for over six minutes, as the Sun Devils took a 20-4 advantage with 13:00 left in the first half. The Redbird drought ended with a layup by Oliver, 20-6, with 11:51 remaining in the half. Broadway made five-straight points to cut ASU's lead to 10 points, 25-15, with 6:57 left before the break.

The Sun Devils answered back and took a 17-point lead, 32-15, with 3:57 left in the half, after ASU went on a 7-0 run. The Redbirds grabbed the momentum for the first time in the game and went on a 7-0 run, pulling within 10 points, 32-22, with 2:42 left before the half. ISU cut ASU's lead to nine at the 1:38 mark off of a jumper by Sykes, but back-to-back Redbird turnovers gave the Sun Devils a 37-26 advantage at the half.

Broadway and Sykes led all scorers in the first half with eight points, as Oliver led all rebounders with six boards. Illinois State shot 31 percent from the field compared to Arizona State's 47 percent. ASU had one more rebound than ISU at the break, 19-18.

Like they did the first half, Arizona State opened the second half with a 9-0 run to take a 20-point lead, 46-26. Winge hit a deep three for the first Redbird basket of the second half at the 17:02 mark. ISU scored five-straight points to get within 15 of ASU, 46-31, with 16:21 to play.

Arizona State went on another run, making five-straight points and held Illinois State scoreless for nearly three minutes to increase its lead by 21 points, 56-35, with 12:03 remaining in the game. Marley Hall hit a jumper and Sykes sank a shot behind the arc to pull within 15 points, 60-45, with 7:39 left in the game, but ASU went on a 6-0 run to push its lead to 22 points, 69-47, at the 5:13 mark. Illinois State and Arizona State traded points in the final minutes of the game, but the Redbirds couldn't overcome their early deficit and fell to the Sun Devils, 77-54.

The Redbirds return to the court, Wednesday, Dec. 7, as they host in-state rival Illinois at 7:05 p.m., in Redbird Arena.
